Zebra BPA Free Labels
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been used since the 1960s. It is used in the manufacturing of plastics and is also used in some thermal materials as a developer. As of 2nd January 2020, under new EU regulations, it will be banned due to concerns about potential health risks.
All thermal papers that contain BPA will be replaced by alternative products. Zebra has successfully tested and certified BPA free alternatives for all affected materials.
Is it in all thermal papers?
No. It is only economy, un-coated grades which are affected.
When is the change taking place?
The ban will be effective from 2nd January 2020. Products containing BPA cannot be sold or shipped after January 1st, 2020.

Zebra’s dedicated supplies team have tested over 35 BPA free raw materials. Out of all of the materials tested, less than 25% met the performance metrics Zebra’s supplies team requires. Many of these BPA free materials showed excessive printhead build-up from the chemical imaging layer, which leads to poor print quality and premature printhead failure. While you may see a slight increase in printhead build-up, with standard recommended printhead cleaning, you should not see a change in print quality or printhead durability with Zebra Certified Supplies.
